The use of as as a conjunction

Lately, I have been seeing "as" used in place of "because" or "since." Is this correct or informal usage? Would using "as" this way be proper for formal papers like MBA theses?

The usage has been around longer than I have. I'd call it register neutral, but a bit dated. There would be nothing improper about using it, in my opinion.
