The use of 'an'

Hello,

What are the rules of using 'an' with words beginning with 'u' (For example, An uncle, but a European.) and 'h'?
I noticed that when the 'h' is not pronounced (an hour, a heir, etc) 'an' is usually used but not 'a', am I right?
And 'a' is used instead of 'an' before 'u' when it is pronounced as ?ju?

Thanks

And there are no rules for words starting with 'o', right? Only 'an' is used before words that start with 'o' since that is a vowel.

Could you name a few words start start with u, but when it not pronounced as ?ju? and that require 'a' before them instead of an?

Hi Nina

I'm not a native english speaker so I may be wrong but this is how I understand it.
You always need to think about (or listen) how a word sounds. Or more exactly how a word begins when spoken. Even though a written word starts with a vowel it may not be pronounced so.
As you noticed 'an' should be used before 'uncle'. It would be difficult to pronounce two vowels one aft

The "n" in "an" is only there to separate "a" from a consecutive vowel sound.

an uncle
a unicorn

P.S. KgF is correct and explained it well!

Nina_Niathere are no rules for words starting with 'o', right?
When 'o' is pronounced with an initial /w/, use 'a'. a one-time offer. These are rare: one and once are the only ones that comes to mind.
