The use of a semicolon

Please view the following sentence. Do to the length of the sentence, I recommend the use of the semicolon, which is stronger than a comma. Please provide feedback. Thanks.

SENTENCE:

These studies have used both quantitative and qualitative methods; and they have been based on a variety of theoretical frameworks such as the identification model, the family life course perspective, human capital theory and social exchange theory.
