The usage of 'would'

Watching from behind the police lines as the milk trucks charged,
one 18 year old youth noted that the police" were dropping like ninepins.
The crowd would attack, and some more would drop. It was a massacre."
Recalled Constable Leslie Bright, a 28 year old with only three weeks' street experience:
"I got hit in the face with a brick; then another brick put me out.
When I came to I had footprints all over my uniform. Those kids were really gunning for us."

Which is correct - 'a repeated action' or 'repeated actions' ?

Anyway, Thank you so much Mister Micawber.
