The usage of "wish" + object (Grammar)

I found the following sentences from an English textbook.

1) I threw one over my shoulder, wishing a return to Italy someday.

2) I found it interesting that even on the other side of the world, people still wish for simple things like happiness, love, and marriage.

I believe that usage 2) "wish for" is completely appropriate in the sentence.

However, I was not able to find usage 1) "wish + object (alone)" from dictionaries except for the following sort of examples, which I do not think exactly match usage 1).

(Excerpt from Collins Dictionary)

8. verb [no cont]

If you say that you would not wish a particular thing on someone, you mean that the thing is so https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/unpleasant that you would not want them to be forced to https://www.collinsdictionary.com/dictionary/english/experience it.It's a horrid experience and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy. [VERB noun + on]

As a result, I guess usage 1) is wrong. Could someone clarify whether usage 1) is correct or wrong?

Thank you in advance.
