the usage of the phrase "some kind"

I got these two sentences from Yahoo, Korea and have been wondering if the second sentence is correct with an article before the noun "wind-up"?

Some kind of expert you are! You know even less than me. (Correct sentence)

Is this some kind of a wind-up? (Why an article before the noun?)

An unnecessary "a" is often placed before a noun in that situation in informal speech and writing. Is this some kind of (a) [wind-up / joke / trick / pyramid scheme]? I don't know why, but it makes the speaker sound more suspicious.
