The usage of the adverb "accordingly"

Regarding the sentence:

It became colder accordingly as we went up higher.

Q1 Does it make sense?

Q2 I wanted to write a sentence which means pretty much the same as "The higher we went up, the colder it became." Did I make it?

Q3 By the way, in the clause "the higher we went up," is the "up" necessary? Is this sentence more appropriate? -- "The higher we went, the colder it became."
