The usage of “so”

I read the sentence (a) in a book. Is this sentence correct (or natural)? I’m not sure but I feel something unnatural about the usage of “so”. Isn’t (b) more natural?

(a) Nothing in recent years has so changed the economy of the United States as the development of the supermarket.

(b) Nothing in recent years has changed the economy of the United States so much as the development of the supermarket.
