The usage of 'repent'

I want to know repent's usage.

Here's definition in my dictionary.

repent

verb

~(of sth) (formal) to feel and show ~~~

example sentences

1. She had repented of what she had done.

2 He came to repent his hasty

As you see 'repent' in 1 & 2, there's a difference: 'of'

If 'of' must be used, why 2 dose not have it?

If 'of' can be omitted, why 1 has it?

Hi, My dictionary adds the comment (often followed by 'of'). In other words, it's optional. Note that the word 'repent' is not very common, outside the context of religion.
