The usage of "need"

I have seent that we use need in these kind of form.

At first, I need to do something.

Second, Something needs to be done. or Something need doing.

I am a little bit confused about the second usage of this form. Can I use not only "need to be done" but also "need doing"?

Is there any diffrence between them? Emotion: smile

Yes, 'needs to be done' = 'needs doing'. I believe the latter is primarily British English.
