The usage of "I was wondering..."

I have learned that "I was wondering if S +V" is a polite way of asking and then how about "I was wondering what / how / which..."? They are also a possible way of asking and it sounds polite?

ex) I was wondering if there is difference between them.

I was wondering what it is.

And by any chance, "I was wondering..." cannot be used for the past? If possible, could you show me any examples.

Thank you so much as usual and take good care.
