The usage of 'come to + verb'

Dear teachers,

I looked up the dictionary to find the usage of 'come to' and I found the example sentences as follows:

She came to regard him as one of her real friends. (correct)
You’ve come to mean a lot to me. (correct)
How did you come to have such an idea? (correct)

When referring to a usage book, I also found the explanations related to 'come to' as follows:

Because of the incident, they came to support the leader. (Wrong)
Because of the incident, they began to support the leader. (Correct)
Because of the incident, they now support the leader. (Correct)

Could you please let me know why 'Because of the incident, they came to support the leader.' is wrong?

Hope to hear from you soon.

Thanks and best regards,

David Kim

The only thing I see is that it has two meanings. But context would tell us which meaning was intended.

It can mean that 1) they physically came to the place for the purpose of supporting the leader, or 2) that mentally they decided to support the leader.
