The usage of but.

Hello,

Could you answer the following questions? Thank you very much.

I remember that “but” is a conjunction. However, I sometimes read sentences like "A."In the sentence A, but serves to negate the former sentence. Is the word “but” here a conjunction or preposition? Another question is which sentence is better?

(A) I strived to teach my students. But they felt apathy with my teaching.

(B) I strived to teach my students, but they felt apathy with my teaching.

Thanks,
