The usage of a causative verb-which is right?

There was so much noise that professor Bob couldn't make himself ____.
(A) hear (B) heard

Answer: (B)

To me, (A) also sounds OK. Could anyone explain why (A) is ruled out?

Hi, Make oneself heard is a very common collocation. I wouldn't call A ungrammatical, but any reasonably educated native speaker would choose B. In such tests, you are supposed to choose what the tester thinks is the most likely option..
