The usage for consequence of the preposition 'to'

Many people were starved to death in the country.
The glass was broken to pieces.

If a noun with a similar meaning to an infinitive can express the state of the result to which the to-infinitive give rise,
the preposition 'to' can substitute for a to-infinitive as in the following examples?

I overslept today to be late for work.
-> I overslept today to tardiness for work.
She heard the death of her best friend to shed tears.
-> She heard the death of her best friend to tears.
