The US President / US President

Hello!
I often see:
1.a) He became the US president in 2009.
1.b) He became US president in 2009.

2.a) She would later become the UK prime minister.
2.b) She would later become UK prime minister.

My understanding is that the definite article is optional, right? There seems no consistency and writers seem to use it based on their preferences.

Thanks!
Vic

There is only one person who is US President at any one time, so the use of the definite article is appropriate. However, "US President" is also a title or position, so in that sense, you may omit the article.
