The U.S. or The US?

Hello, Teachers,

I read an article with the title as follows:

"The US key interest hike and its effects on the Korean economy"

As far as I know, the above-mentioned phrase should be changed as follows:

"The U.S. key interest hike and its effects on the Korean economy"

In other words, my understanding is that "The US" should be always changed to "The U.S."

But sometimes, I saw many cases expressing "The US" without period after "U" and "S" respectively.

Hope to have your help.

Thanks and best regards,

David Kim

In American English, we use both.

Thanks for your feedback.
Actually, I learned that the U.S. only is correct in AMERICAN English.

Then should I remember as follows?

British Enlglish: the US only
AMERICAN English: Both the US and the U.S.

It is not totally impossible that you might see "U.S." used in BrE, and it is not a glaring error. Even so, "US" dominates, at least in modern writing.
