The unique role of volunteers help to fulfill the mission.

Hi,

I was curious about the following sentence and wether the plurals and singulars are correct. Role is definitely singular in this case, and there are several volunteers. It seems more natural to change help to helps, but someone else wrote this so I don't want to change it unless it's wrong. If it matters, this is for an American organization. I'm new to this forum so I don't know if that matters.


"The unique role of volunteers help to fulfill the mission."

The sentence is muddled as well as ungrammatical. These are better choices.

The volunteers help to fulfill the mission of the organization.
The role of volunteers is unique in helping the organization to fulfill its mission.
The  volunteers play a unique role in helping the organization to fulfill its mission.
