I read the following in one of the patient information leaflet.
"It will depend on the type of infection and how bad it is"
Please explain to me the use of "the" in "the type of infection"?
Which noun does "the" referer to and how does it make specific so that the reader or listener knows about its specific reference?
Thanks

It depends on the type of car you want to buy.
"the" belongs to "type". "the type" implies "the type (of infection) that is present / that the patient is suffering from / etc.", or anything similar that is implied by the context, and this is what justifies the definite article
