The Two Numbers

Hi. How are you?

The following is a conversation between a man and the operator who answered his call.

"Yes, I want to call California. And can you charge that to my home number?"

"I can do that for you, sir. What are the two numbers?"

What is "the two numbers"? Area code? The U.S. area codes are three digits, aren't they? Please help me understand what it is.

Thanks,

Hiro/ Sendai, Japan

A phone number is construed as a single entity. " The "two numbers" refered to above are the caller's home number (the one to be charged) and the one he actually wants to call in California.

A phone number is construed as a single entity. You don't ask someone for their "phone numbers" you ask for their "phone number."

The "two numbers" refered to above are the caller's home number (the one to be charged) and the one he actually wants to call in California.

Oh, that's right. How come I didn't think of that? The two numbers --- the caller's home number and the number he is calling.

Thanks for your help. Much appreciated.

Hiro
