The total is 20 months???

The below was what I spoke today. Now I feel the sentence "The total is 20 months" a little odd. Could you correct it for me?

- The last year, I took private tuition for Vietnamese language. She taught me 3 hours a week. Not effective! Since April this year, I have been going to school. The total is 20 months.
