The thunderstorm started off with heavy hail the size of squash balls.

Hello.

Is the sentence below correct?

The thunderstorm started off with heavy hail the size of squash balls.

Especially I am not sure about how 'heavy hail' and 'the size of squash balls' are connected, or, in fact, how they are not connected.

Yes, it's correct (give or take a quibble about whether it is hail or hailstones that are this size). This is a set pattern used for measurement comparisons: hailstones the size of squash ***** a building the length of a football pitch a bull the weight of a small car etc.
