The "though" Comma

At any rate though, there was something strange about her.

I have ALWAYS put a comma before "though" when it appears that way. But is it really grammatically necessary, or is it just a stylistic thing? I'll always put the comma before it, but I would just like to know.

Thanks.

I'm afraid I would put it if I had to, but deletion of 'though' would speed up the sentence. It seems to be that 'at any rate' and 'though' have heavily overlapping meanings.

Right, so it is, in fact, grammatically necessary to put a comma before "though" when it comes mid-sentence.

Please note that punctuation is not grammar; it is a different consideration. I would treat 'though' like I treat 'however'.
