the Thames was a thread of silver below them

Could somebody explain this sentence to me? I was looking for the meaning of 'thread'. The above is the example in the Oxford dictionary.
In the Longman: The Colorado River was just a thread of silver, 4000 feet below.
I haven't a clue.
