Which sentence, VC? I would fix them like this:

'In 1994, the proportion of the female population who consume alcoholic beverages was X percent, but according to a recent survey, this figure has increased by 10%.'

Unless, MM, the statistics are about young women, (or 'girls'), or beverages other than alcoholic. Then you could possibly write:

The rate of young girls who drink (presumed to mean 'drink alcoholic beverages'--I suppose, though I doubt it, that the statement could have been excerpted from an article on milk, soda, coffee, or tea consumption) has increased 1

Thanks, Mr. MM and davkett
