(The) ten dollars

Dear Teachers,
"This will be ten dollars, sir."
"Okay," John said and handed over ten dollars.
"Okay," John said and handed over THE ten dollars.

Is either one okay (is it stylistic)? Or is only one of them correct?

I think both are correct. Only the article makes it more concrete=the ten dollars he was asked for.
