The teacher to mean all teachers

Hi. Please help. I think in writing we frequently use the phrase "the teacher" or "the student" to refer to all teachers and all students when they are referred to generally. Is it correct? I am sorry for not providing you complete example sentences.

You can use "the" to mean "the general category of people who are teachers/students" just like you can say "The elephant is the largest land mammal."

Hi. Thank you. Would the following sentence which I believe is made in reference to English teachers be correct? Please see the underlined part.

Consequently, the teacher has to try to help students correct their own mistakes.

If it is, could this be correct also? Thank you again for your help in advance.
