The bar chart depicts the figures for imprisonment in five nations, namely the UK, Australia, New Zealand, the USA and Canada from 1930 to 1980.
Overall, the number of imprisonment in the UK, the USA and Canada witnessed an upward trend. Meanwhile, the timescale given went through a downward trend in the quantity of inmates in both Australia and New Zealand.
There was a gradual rise in the number of prison in the UK from 30 thousand to under 80 thousand in the first 40 years before remaining the same at 80 thousand in 1980. Likewise, the figure for imprisonment in the USA stood at 100 thousand in 1930 and reached the second highest peak of 130 thousand in 1940 before fluctuating and peaking at the highest point of 140 in 1980. Canada also witnessed a fluctuation between 80 thousand prisoners and 120 thousand inmates in the period.
On the other hand, the number of prison in Australia began at 70 thousand and peaked its lowest point of 50 thousand before fluctuating noticeably between 50 thousand and 80 thousand. A noticeable fluctuation between 50 thousand and 100 thousand was seen in the number of imprisonment in New Zealand.
