Joe stood on top of the mountain and looked at the surrounding terrain.

Is it the same to reword the above as the following? Thanks.

Joe stood on the top of the mountain and looked at the nearby landscape.

surrounding and nearby are not similar enough. looked at the landscape all around him is closer to surrounding . Otherwise, it's close enough.

... looked at the landscape all around him is closer to surrounding.
