the + superlative adverb

Consider these two sentences:

I get up earliest in my family.

I get up the earliest in my family.

Is it proper to drop the article "the" in the first sentence. Can you do that with a superlative adverb? What's the rule for using the article with the superlative adverb?

I've found information about superlative adjectives and "the", but not superlative adverbs.

Thanks for your help.

I am happy with the help. I am looking for a more definite answer as to why one would be marked wrong over the other. Or why "the" can be omitted. I know the sentences could be stronger if written in other ways, BUT I am looking at these specific sentences.

Just searching for various opinions on the matter, I guess.
