The subject of 'it' - What does it indicate in this sentance?

Students love to play soccer. They don’t care much about who wins or loses, and it does not seem to worry them if the game is not yet finished.

A studnet asked me this and I didn't know what he was asking. What is it? I thought that it reffered to playing the game of soccer. How can I explain this best?

Thanks in advance.
