The subject and the meaning of "divided between"

Salaam

In the underlined part of the paragraph below,

1. Was he Tesla who "divided between those who believed... and those who looked for..."?

2. Does it mean that his invention made some people to believe he has supernatural power and some others to believe there is a trick inside the boat?(and probably no one believed his invention?)

Thanks in advance!

He (Tesla) used it (remote control system), in 1898 to wirelessly steer a small boat in an electric fair, to the amazement of an audience divided between those who believed that Tesla had telekinetic powers to those who looked for a trick inside the boat. His little invention was the forerunner of drones and TV remote control.

The audience were divided between those who believed X and those who looked for Y. It means that some people in the audience did the first thing, while the others did the second thing. It seems best to consider "divided" an adjective in this case.
