"The students failed because their test scores are low." or "the students failed because their test scores were low."

1- "The students failed because their test scores are low."

2- "The students failed because their test scores were low."

Hello, I'm confused which one is correct. The first one seems to make more sense since
the second one implies that the students' test scores may not be low in the present time and the students' test scores are still low in the present time.

1- "The students failed because their test scores are low." OK if they failed recently, eg yesterday. Not OK if they failed eg 20 years ago.


2- "The students failed because their test scores were low." OK to say in both of the above situations.
