The student association/club/group/society

The student association is an umbrella organization that includes seven different programs.

HI,

Is "association" in the above equal to club, group, and society?"

Besides, what could "seven different programs" refer to? Without examples, "programs" are extremely abstract for me.

Thanks.

Associations are generally larger, more formally organized organizations than are clubs and groups. Societies are generally non-profit, as are many associations (as this one no doubt is). The programs are various helps to students– perhaps programs like Student Loans, Tutor Program, Social Events, Housing Assistance, etc.
