The stories are self-contained out of continuity single chapters.

In 2012, DC Comics revived the series as Legends of the Dark Knight, a digital-first weekly series. This time, the stories are self-contained out of continuity single chapters.

I'd like to know whether the underlined phrase means the following:
Within only one chapter, a story has continuity and is completed, and the chapter is completely disconnected from other chapters.
And I'd like to know whether in my example, "out of" means "ways/ means."

Thank you in advance for your help.
