In today's Metro UK newspaper (page 46) a footballer is referred to as "the Spain striker"? That expression sounds wrong to me somehow. I'd always expect "the Spanish striker". Though, on the other hand, expressions like "the London Eye" come to my mind. How does it sound to a native ear?
Thanks.
It's normal to refer to a member of the Spanish national football team as 'the Spain striker'. In a different context you will hear 'Jose Mañana is a Spanish defender who plays for Wolverhampton Wednesday'.
