The Spacing of an Ellipsis

"The thing is...I...well, it's just that..."

That's just a quick example off the top of my head of using an ellipsis in dialogue. I want to know if it's okay to use an ellipsis like that without the space between it and the letters that surround it. Perhaps this is just a stylistic matter; I don't know.

Okay, it's just that I've been seeing it with the spaces a lot lately, much more so than I've ever seen it without the spaces. So, I take it you reject the Chicago Manual Style on the matter, then?

Yes, I looked at a couple of other guides which advocate spaces. Oh, well—do as you like then, consistently. Or better, ask the person to whom you're submitting the writing.
