The sock strecthes and... snaps/tears

Are both snaps and tears OK here? Do they sound equally dramatic? Which one would be your choice?

She's running across the room when suddenly her sock catches on a nail in the floor. The sock stretches and... snaps/tears, sending her to the floor with a loud thump.
