The snow or snow?

Could you check these sentences? I'd also like to know whether 'the' is necessary before 'snow.'

When I lived in Germany, I saw all my neighbors shoveling (the?) snow before dawn. I was impressed by how public-minded they were. However, one of them said to me, "You should start shoveling (the?) snow immediately. If an elderly woman falls down and gets seriously injured in front of your house , you will have to pay a lot of money."
