(the) snow

When I looked up the word "snow", many examples were provided.

Here're some of them.

1. Snow was falling heavily.

2. We had snow in May this year.

3. The snow was beginning to melt.

4. Children were playing in the snow

5. 20cm of snow were expected today.

6. The snow didn't settle.

7. Her skin was as white as snow.

Q) Do the article "the" imply there's a context or it itself should be added to mean a general situation? (for example the in #3, does it mean the specific snow was beginning to melt in a specific time that the writer intended? I think "the" should be added in #3 while it is optional in #1, shouldn't it?)

In your examples where the snow is referred to (3, 4, and 6) all the writers are talking about specific examples of snow at specific times. In normal use there would be some context present so the reader would already know what snow the writer was talking about. The could indeed have been included in #1 if the writer had wanted to.
