the situation in china is different from in america

A sentence: The situation in China is different from in America.

This can be regarded as ellipsis, but is it grammatical or usual? If we use THAN, which is a constant source of argument over whether it is a preposition or conjuction, then the ellipsis is perfectly acceptable, but I am not sure whether FROM can idiomatically perform a similar function.

Could you help me?
