The simple Past Tense

I learned that the simple past tense is unrelated to the present. It just tells an event happened. Nothing more. However, the simple past tense used in the following example shows the simple past tense IS RELEVANT to the present context, just like the present perfect.

I can't go to school. I broke my leg yesterday.

Could anyone kindly help me explain this case?

Thank you very much.

In I broke my leg yesterday, the event is place in past time ( yesterday ) and is not in itself related to present time. However, like many other past-time events , the breaking of a leg may have present-time consequences.
