The simple past and the present perfect

Hi, teachers.

1. I always knew we were friends.

2. I have always known we are friends.

Scholars say they have the same meaning.

It confuses me so much. What is the utterer's concern respectively?

I find the second one somewhat anomalous, so I'm going to change it.

1. I always knew we were friends.

2. I have always known we were friends.

If you're talking about the current situation, and 'we' means 'you and I', both have the same meaning. The second one is perhaps slightly more correct, but either one is possible.
