The silence is stifling

The tense atmosphere makes me so nervous that I wish I could get out of here as soon as possible. The silence is stifling.

Hi,

Is it proper to replace the bolded line with "The silence is choking/suffocating me?"

Besides, is "tense" in the above interchangeable with "tight/intense?" Thanks.
