"The shot is up!" - a basketball term?

Hello everyone,

Another question from ALF series I am watching.

ALF is sitting in the living room cutting his toenails. When the toenail flies up in the air, ALF shouts (imitating a sports announcer)

"The shot is up! Three points!"

I looked it up in the dictionary and found nothing. Then I googled the phrase and found out it is used in basketball. However, I don't understand what it means.

If you are a basketball fan, I hope you will be able to explain.

In addition, a three-point shot in basketball is taken from an unusually long distance away. Thus, the implication here is that the toenail flew an unusually long distance through the air.
