The shop got shut down.

Hi

Are these sentences natural? I am not sure about "close down".

The shop got shut down last year due to lack of resources.
The shop closed down? due to lack of resources.

Thanks,

Tom

PS: Can we also say "got closed down"?

"the shop got closed/shut down" is correct in colloquial or everyday English. More formally it would be "the shop was closed/shut down". Both these imply that the shop was forced to close by an external authority, presumably in this case a person or institution who no longer had the resources to fund its operation.

  • "the shop closed/shut (down)" does not have the same "external cause" implication.
  • This use of "due to" would traditionally be deemed incorrect.
