The series is a coming of age [for] Merlin

The following is the account of The Chronicles of Amber.

The series is a coming of age for Merlin with his heritage as a Prince of Chaos and Amber.

I think "coming of age" an adjective phrase.
So, I'd like to know what role "for" plays here.
Thank you in advance for your help.
