The senseless killing

Humans are not genetically required to be meat-eaters, so vegetarianism is the only moral choice to avoid the senseless killing of animals.
I saw the above in one of the videos about thesis statement on YouTube.
Why do we need "the" before senseless here? Please explain to me the grammatical use of "the" in the given context. If we remove it, what difference does it make to the sentence?
