Grammar

the second largest

1. Canada is the second-leading nation in oil reserves after Saudi Arabia.

2. Canada has the second largest oil reserves in the world after Saudi Arabia

Are both correct and mean the same thing?
Thanks.

#1 is not correct because "leading" isn't a superalative adjective.

Either, "After Saudi Arabia, Canada has the largest oil reserves in the world" or "Canada has the second largest oil reserves in the world".

Does anyone know if it's correct to say, "Canada ranks second behind Saudi Arabia in the size of the country's oil reserves." ??

If not, is there any way to keep "second" and "Saudi Arabia" both in the sentence?

Avangi, Thanks for bringing that up. It sounds correct to me. I wonder why the original construction has to be changed when the #1 country is mentioned while the rank version sounds fine.
