The Scotts' house is this

a) The Scotts' house is this.

b) This is the Scotts' house.

c) This house is the Scotts'.

I very much wonder if the first sentence "a" is correct. Can we use "this/that/these/those etc..." in this way?

Hi Mr C Sentence a) is correct but you don't hear it very often. If I were standing on a street, I would point at a house and say: The Scotts' house is this one . CB

I guess that sentence (c) is incorrect.

You need to show possession. I believe that the sentence should be:

This house belongs to the Scotts.

I think "This house is the Scotts'." is okay -- the apostrophe shows possession. (If I heard the sentence spoken, I would assume that there was an apostrophe, since"This house is the Scotts" doesn't make any sense.) Of course, "This house belongs to the Scotts." is also fine.

Hi MrCurious

I agree with Khoff. Sentences (b) and (c) are OK, and I also agree with Cool Breeze that sentence (a) needs the word 'one'.
